Guruge, thinker

Welcome to my Web site. I am Anura Gurugé -- and most people just call me  'Anu'.

Anura GurugeThis site portrays my professional activities and academic interests. On the professional front the six broad categories of work that I am involved with are:

   1. high-tech consulting & analysis

   2. technical writing for corporations &
       publications

   3. publisher & editor at large of "IT In-Depth"

   4. teaching

   5. Web site design and implementation

Big IBM systems (in which I have dabbled in since 1974) continue to be my first love when it comes to IT. Consequently I focus on large data Anura Guruge Popes and the Tale of Their Namescenter issues. Given my legacy as “Mr. SNA,” I can’t really get away from large data center related topics.

In July 2008, my academic interests (a.k.a. 'my hobby') got a bit more prominence with the publication of my first non-IT book: "Popes and the Tale of Their Names." That I was very interested in Church history an Cathedrals was never a secret -- particularly on this Web site. After five dense books on technology, that I would write my sixth on papal history is somewhat of a departure from the norm. But it was exciting. It was a rare opportunity to do some original research. In my mid-50s I have to concede that I am, per family tradition, a workaholic. So if there is a lull in IT work, as is increasingly the case, I have to keep myself occupied with something ... and that has become papal history. I now have a few papal history related BLOGs. If you are interested start with this one. They are all listed in the LINKS page.

The primary technology areas that I now deal with can be summarized as being:

large data center issues

mainframe-centric solutions

XML Web services

grid computing

Web-to-host and EAI

corporate portals

IBM POWER5-based solutions open source initiatives
