As some of you have worked out by now I like to amble. I amble every day, rain or shine, snow or sleet, heat or wind. I particularly enjoy ambling in Lubec. It is quaint, has incredible views, some impressive & intriguing properties & invariably a very pleasant citizenry. So, when I am in the ‘Bold Coast‘, given that I now stay exclusively in Lubec, I tend to gallivant around town & outskirts in the mornings & at night — spending the rest of the day pounding, with relish, the many coastal & ‘Cobscook Bay‘ trails.
On my last visit, in October, I was meandering through town, exploring new back roads when I saw this sign. WOW. I am glad that it was clearly attributed — i.e., to ‘Groucho Marx‘. While I, of course, like most others know some of his famous witticism, e.g., “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.“, I don’t think I had, alas, come across this one before. I love it. Just love it. It is so clever & catching.
I was so moved by it that I had to go meet the owners & I did. I went up the steps & rang the bell. I spoke with Mr. Hoffman. He was delightful. He, as I had suspected, was not originally from Lubec or Maine. He had moved up from Philly. I am glad he is in Lubec.
On a related but separate note, a couple of hours after the ‘Lubec Historical Society‘ gave me some ‘inaccurate’ data as to the origins of the ‘Peacock House‘ name! Hhhmmm. I will have to bear that in mind in future. Triple check anything & everything. ‘Peacock House’ INDEED is related to the ‘famous’ Lubec Peacock sardine factory. The Peacock family that owned the cannery lived in the house! Just goes to show.
