For 2022Social Security Benefits‘ Excel Worksheet.

Updated … does ‘Smaller of Lines‘ automatically.

What it looks like INSIDE. Check it. Change it. Whatever. It is YOURS.

This is NOT sophisticated or fancy. It is very SIMPLE & BASIC.

I do my taxes by hand. SMILE. Have done so for years. I was well trained by an AMAZING tax accountant over a decade. He did all of his returns, & he had HUNDREDS of clients, by hand! He showed me how to do it by hand. To be honest I kind of enjoy doing it by hand. Sure beats all the DUMB & inane questions you have to answer with the likes of ‘TurboTax’ & ‘H&R Block’. If you know your way around the 1040 it is easy enough to just go in & fill the forms directly.

The only problem is that you have to do the worksheets. Again, that doesn’t bother me overly. SMILE. I do know my way around a calculator too.

This year I DASHED off this quick Excel to CHECK MY MATH on the ‘Qualified Dividends And Capital Gain Tax Worksheet‘. But, PLEASE check my math on the Excel. It is very, very basic. I had looked around for a spreadsheet like this. SIMPLE. Not complicated. Check the formulas. Make sure I haven’t screwed up.

Yes, I looked at ‘Excel1040‘. It was OVERKILL for my needs. I just needed to check my math.

So, IF you have a similar need, give this a spin. It is SAFE. No macros. Just the simplest of formulas. But, check my math. SMILE.

Thank YOU for saying Thank YOU. I have great respect for politeness. As you may have noticed it is not anything fancy! I just wanted to double-check my hand calculations. IF you improved it, or have suggestions, please let me know. ALL the best. I, for the first time in my life (in the US), filed early! I owed a ‘ton’ because I cleared out all my cap gains (just in case)! I paid what I owed, filed & now I can start afresh for 2022. ALL the best. Thanks. Cheers.

Also thanks for developing this worksheet. I also didn’t want to pay for a tax prep program. I’m retired for CPA after 40 years. They changed tax software this year and so i had to prepare mine by hand….

Thank you for creating this spreadsheet! It is extremely helpful. I was struggling to complete the IRS worksheet and this filled in the gaps in my understanding of how to do it correctly.

I am so glad it helped. Can I please ask you, why/what are you doing your taxes in December. Is this for 2022 or have you started on 2023? Even with extension don’t you have to file by Sept. 15. Just curious. All the best.

Sure! I stumbled on your worksheet over the summer while I was doing some Roth IRA conversions. I used the 2021 TurboTax program to calculate my quarterly estimated taxes for the conversion but wanted to cross check the numbers. Now that my 2022 income is clearer, I’m revisiting my Roth conversions for 2022 to determine if I have any remaining conversion space available in my tax bracket.

Ah. Very clever. Have you heard that many of the PAID Tax Preparation programs (TurboTax the possible exception) shared tax information with FaceBook. I don’t use any software. I do it all by hand. SMILE. All the best. Happy Holidays.

Thanks Anura, you saved me time trying to set this up myself! With this inspiration, I may try to add some conditional statements and/or convert to an Excel macro for future use (I use Excel as a check on my TaxAct results, and for better understanding of how one’s yearly tax form inputs affect the final results).

Happy New Year. Glad it came in handy. IF you make a better one please do share. I think people will be leery of one with Macros. You know that there is a full-blown, very fancy, ‘Excel1040.com‘. People rave about. Too fancy for my needs. I guess/hope you heard that TaxAct has been SHARING customer data with Facebook. Google it. It broke a few weeks ago. This is why I don’t use any software. Do it by hand. SMILE. But, my taxes are somewhat complex but not mind blowing. I manage. All the best.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for these lovely, kind words. You made MY YEAR! You don’t often get people THANKING you for anything these days. You TOO are a wonderful human. Salt of the earth. IF we could get MORE to be like us. Glad it helped. All the best. Thank you, again. Anura.
P.S., Sorry to the delay in approving this & replying. I had gone to the ‘Bold Coast’, Maine for a quick, 4-day vacation. When I am travelling I don’t check e-mails, Blog or anything. SMILE.

Thank YOU, David. That is very kind. Glad I was able to help. I too had been looking for just that. That is why I ended up doing it. Crazy isn’t it. The IRS should provide this. They can even have mine & IMPROVE it. Writing is my passion, addiction & therapy. There was a time I made money doing it. Shouldn’t complain. Writing has enabled me to live the life I do. Thank you for all the kind words. Did you BUY any books. SMILE. I had to ask. All the best. Stay in touch. Cheers, Anura

Thank you so much for this! There may be a typo on Line 6, the instructions seem to say $83,350 (rather than $88,350). Hope that helps.

Thank YOU for telling me about the TYPO. Wow. I have had over a 1,000 downloads BUT nobody prior to YOU told me about it. Actually got a few others thanking me — which is always nice. My middle name is ‘TYPO’, so this was to be expected. I guess people just corrected it as they went along. I REALLY, REALLY appreciate you pointing it out. I was gone all day yesterday. It is fixed now. SMILE. Thanks. I understand that today, for MOST, is Tax day. Those in New England get till Tuesday. SMILE. Many thanks. Keep in touch. All the best.

I stubbornly refuse to pay someone or some software to do my taxes, but it takes me forever. The worksheets in the instructions are maddening, to say the least, they shred my brain. Thank you so much for simplifying and reassuring.

Thank YOU, Susan. We are kindred spirits. Luckily my taxes are relatively simple, cap. gains the only complex part. I am so GLAD that this worksheet was of help. I also appreciate you making the effort to leave this LOVELY comment. Thank you. I hope you have already filed your taxes. SMILE. It is May. I hope you didn’t have to get an extension. All the best.

I calculate all my taxes and then send in a estimated tax payment of $10.00, that automatically gets me an extension without having to mail one in and I then have all the time to get it organized and rechecked. I read somewhere that the IRS has to select a certain number of returns for audit and is never sure how many will come in with the extension so most returns selected for audit (non computerized checking) are selected in April. Does not hurt. I always make sure my estimated tax payments are a little smaller than the tax due so I am not waiting for a big refund, or just apply to the next years tax. I will check your writings and other spreadsheets, I love to learn new stuff.

Very clever. Very clever. No wonder you are a CPA. All the best. Please keep in touch. Are YOU a TAX expert — specifically stock option related taxes? If SO can I PLEASE hire you to answer ONE (& only one) question. SMILE. I will even pay you beforehand. SMILE. Thanks. Anura P.S., I am addicted to option-trading. So rack up ENORMOUS short-term cap. gains. SMILE/CRY.

Thank you, I have so many zero’s I get confused doing this worksheet by hand. I do my taxes by hand, I am a CPA and so is my daughter (she laughs at me). I probably will add some lookups and have it do the actual tax computation. Not really a writer but love creating spreadsheets like this.

I was looking for an easy way to calculate the equivalent of the “Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet—Line 16” in the 1040 form. I found yours; thank you! I’m also looking to 2023 filings and doing a Roth conversion. I *think* I did find one problem in the sheet: Line 5 “Subtract line 4 from line 1” should be MAX(B10B4, 0) so that it can’t ever go negative. When I changed this, the final number matched what my CPA calculated in my 2022 1040! Thanks again!! Chris
