But, that was a week later, April 7, 2023.

Not bad, eh? We do get spectacular sunsets this time of the year. My window, next to my desk looks out NNW.

Yes, I kind of get blasse to them THOUGH I know I shouldn’t. Today I made a point of taking this picture. I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

Rejoice! REJOICE!

My favorite day of the year, hands down.

As of the Winter Solstice days start getting longer!

The Winter Solstice, the SHORTEST DAY of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Welcome YULE!

Shout it out loud. Welcome YULE.

Evenings have already started getting longer — as I pointed out in this post. Funnily enough (if it can be construed as funny) mornings DO NOT START getting earlier until 2024! Then, we really getting into the stride of things. Within a month of the solstice we would have gained in excess of 30 minutes!

New Hampshire Right Now Is Seeing The Earliest Sunsets Of Winter 2023 — Though The Solstice Is 10-Days Away.

From last year, BUT it is the SAME.
Dates just shifted by one.

Kind of a strange concept to grapple with. The EARLIEST SUNSETS in New Hampshire happen around NOW — i.e., about 2-weeks ahead of the Winter Solstice.

That doesn’t mean we have as yet seen our SHORTEST DAY (my favorite day of the year) as yet. That still happens on December 21 — the Winter Solstice.

So, what gives.

Sunrise is still getting LATER & LATER. That is what SHORTENS the overall hours of daylight.

You can see this from the above table — with my annotations.

The shortening (or the lengthening) of days are NOT symmetrical — i.e., sunrise & sunset are not in lock steps. So, after December 14 sunsets start becoming LATER, but so do sunrises. Sunrises don’t start to get EARLIER till mid-January! So, the increase in daylight, post the solstice, is all due to sunsets happening later. Weird, but that is how it works.

Sunset In Central New Hampshire AFTER ‘Hurricane Lee’ Went Past The Coast.

Given that we are about 40-mile inland, ‘Hurricane Lee’ was really a non-event for us. Yes, we had some gusty winds & there are still some gusts. Hardly any rain. A fine drizzle, if that.

So, we lucked out. Glad about that.

A fairly common occurrence in New England ahead of a storm.

Saw it out of my office window.

Didn’t have the time or inclination to head to the beach to get an unobstructed view. So shot these, in a hurry, from the road. But, you get the idea.

We have indeed come a LONG WAY from the ‘Winter Solstice‘ (which was on December 21, 2022).

As you can see from the chart above sunsets were happening around 4:11pm!

That was 144 days ago — i.e., 4 months, 3 weeks …

We have gained nearly 170 minutes of daylight! 170 minutes. 2 hours 50 minutes.

It will continue to get better. We have ANOTHER 30 minutes to go! Around the ‘Summer Solstice‘ in about 5 weeks sunsets will be at 8:30pm. Wow. THEN COMES WINTER. I kid you not. After the Summer Solstice it is all downhill –heading pell mell into winter. So enjoy, rejoice, soak it in.

I am posting this at 8:28pm & we still have some twilight. Wow. How wonderful.

This was at 7:58pm last night. I was on my way home from Maine. This is 2.5 miles up from home. It had been a great sunset for the better part of 45 minutes. I was trying to get home by 8pm so didn’t stop earlier. But, I knew I had to stop. I did. So, ENJOY.
