Yes, they initially missed ‘Beaujolais Nouveau Day‘, viz. November 17, 2022 (the 3rd Thursday of November) — see below — THEN they decided they were only going to sell it South of Concord.
I went looking for a bottle, on December 1, 2022, to the ‘Gilford’ store. Didn’t see a display. So, I asked a lady. She directed me, immediately, to THE MANGER. He was on the ball. Gave me the whole scoop. The Commission had decided that only stores South of Concord would get the 2022 ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’! I was gobsmacked. What? We are now 2nd class citizens within the State. The Manager, to his credit (& he is a v. nice guy), was not happy & said that he had sent an e-mail complaining. He also added that his e-mail did nothing & he did not expect that they would even bother to take any notice of it.
I was livid.
I think the Commissioner, Joseph W. Mollica, should be impeached. This is a crime against us — those living North of Concord. The sheer audacity.
I called and complained. They said someone will call me back to discuss. They never did. Not good.
The New Hampshire Liquor Stores, only ever interested in raking in as much money as they can possibly do, has never bothered to understand wine — & in particular ‘Beaujolais Nouveau’. There isn’t that much money in it — the bottles are (still) relatively inexpensive.
Their interest is in hard liquor where they have hefty margins.
That was yesterday! The 3rd Thursday of November. That is a sacred day. The 3rd Thursday of November — Beaujolais Nouveau Day around the world. And it never varies. Same each & every year. The 3rd Thursday of November.
Delayed. Look for it this weekend. Philistines. Clueless.
I will, grudgingly, buy a bottle to taste it. But, that is it. In other years I but at least 6 bottles. But, screw the NH Liquor Stores. I am not giving them too much of my money.
But, it will NOT be so in damn, bloody New Hampshire!
Most likely due to the incompetence of the damn, bloody New Hampshire State Liquor Stores. They are philistines. NO bloody idea that today is Beaujolais Nouveau Day. Well …
I tried NOT ONE but two LARGE NH Liquor Stores. Don’t have it. They claim it is on a ship in Boston harbor.
I am beyond LIVID.
First time, as far as I can remember, & we are talking at least 40 years, WHEN I have NOT been able to celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day.
I wish, I wish I could live somewhere else. I really do.
I will confess that I think that it is probably the ugliest wine label I have ever seen! Yikes. What are supposed to be two glasses of wine look more like dangling bull’s testicles. Yes, I know that you mustn’t judge a wine by its label, but dear Georges Duboeuf could sure have done better.
I didn’t have the time to check this year, BUT if the last few years are anything to go by, they have a worldwide COMPETITION for the design of the label. If that was the case, they are saying this was the BEST they got. Wow. I find that hard to believe.
Well, here’s keeping my fingers crossed that the wine will be 10,000 times more appealing than the label. SMILE.
As is my yearly wont, I am sipping the Nouveau as I write this.
It is certainly pleasant enough (but, some might argue, correctly, that I am not a very harsh critic of red wine as long as it is liquid, red, contains some alcohol & doesn’t taste like vinegar). Jokes apart, it is not bad. Not as ‘fruity’ (i.e., slightly sweet) as the last few years.
To my (unrefined) palate it comes across as more tart & tangy than what we had in the last few years. Yes, I know the technical term. Tanin. So, it appears to have more tannin. That is NOT a bad thing. Red wine is supposed to have tanin.
Interesting wine. The first sip can leave your tongue, palate & senses a tad confused. You taste the tannin BUT then there is a ‘sweeter’ aftertaste that kicks in right behind. Kind of balances each other. But, in the end, some will, like I, contend that this is more of a ‘harsher’ Nouveau than what we got accustomed to over the last few years. That is bound to happen. Nothing wrong with that.
I still like it. I will still drink the 3 bottles I bought & will most likely buy a few more.
Not too thrilled with the $12.99 price. Yes, inflation. But, I think we have got close to the ceiling. For $13.99 you could get a more refined red. SMILE.
I had a lot going on this month with my new PC (after 12 years) & new car. Plus, there have been other distractions & priorities. So, one way or another, until late last night I had forgotten that Beaujolais Nouveau 2021 was upon I. But, that was OK. I still had time to celebrate THE DAY. And I did.
As I had expected the price had gone up another $1 this year. This is becoming bit of a joke. They keep on raising the price $1 EACH YEAR. At $12.99 they are getting close to the ceiling. Beaujolais Nouveau, or no Nouveau, you will have to think hard as to whether you really want to fork out $13.99 for a ‘rough’ red. But, we can wait till next year to worry about that. For now, we are still in 2021, at $12.99 a bottle … & CHEERS.
