Bright Star, In The South, Over New Hampshire Is ‘Sirius’. ‘Jupiter’ Is By The Moon.

Not counting the Moon, these two, viz., ‘Sirius‘ & ‘Jupiter‘, are the BRIGHTEST objects in the New Hampshire night skies as we head towards Christmas.

I just wanted to make sure you knew which is which.

Sirius is the BRIGHTEST star in our NIGHT sky. The Sun, obviously, is the brightest star that we get to see.

Sirius is always magical. Worth looking at. It always dominates our Winter sky. I know, because I go out ambling, for a mile, each & every night. Enjoy.

That Bright Blob Next To The Moon Is Not A Star — It is Jupiter.

It is a very striking, impossible to miss, conjunction in the night sky over New England.

I knew it was a planet (& even though this was late at night, rather than early morning) I double checked to see whether it was Venus or Jupiter. I should have remembered. We get this Moon-Jupiter conjunction quite often in Winter. [Venus, per its colloquial name ‘morning star’, tends to be more visible in the morning as opposed to late nights.]

Well, enjoy it. It is quite the sight.

If you are outside it is hard to miss. The moon & Jupiter (the brighter of the two planets given it is both BIGGER & closer) are bright & resplendent. The conjunction show at top is what you will see today & tomorrow.

Then, on Saturday, the moon moves above the two planets to give us quite the straight light conjunction. Not sure about Friday, but I think the weather will cooperate most of the other nights. It is worth stepping outside to marvel. Not that cold.

I go out, nearly every night (bar heavy rain) around 11pm, & last night the sky was so clear & dark. The stars shone brightly. It was quite the sight.

The Truck Jumped Over The Lighthouse, Lubec, Maine — Bold Coast.

I did wait to see if I really could get a cow jumping over the moon above Mulholland Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine but alas this was the best I got. So, I made this poor graphic to atone those that might take umbrage at my liberties with nursery rhymes.

I took this picture from Mowry Beach, Lubec. I couldn’t resist. It amused I, but I am easily amused.

Yes, it is possible that the moon, at certain times, might appear below the bridge. That would make a great picture. IF I am lucky enough to get a place in Lubec, as I wish, maybe I can scope that out.

But, for now, this the best I can do. Sorry. But, I hope it amuses you. Smile.

Pleasing Crescent Moon & Resplendent ‘Venus’ Conjunction Over New England For The Next Few Nights.

Tonight, i.e., Saturday, October 9, 2021, it is at its most pleasing & iconic. Venus, resplendent, dangling beneath a sharply demarcated crescent moon. Look to the southwest. You can’t miss the Moon. But, the Moon & Venus will sink below the treeline (& then the horizon) by 8:30pm (Eastern).

Tomorrow, i.e., Sunday, October 10, 2021, at 7:30pm (Eastern) we will still have roughly the same conjunction. Venus, however, much further below the Moon. But, Venus will duck behind the trees by 8pm. Again look to the southwest.

Same general pattern for the next few days, though Venus will sink lower & lower spoiling the conjunction.

I happened to see it, at 11pm, last night, during my 1-mile postprandial walk. [Yes, I eat dinner around 9pm. Don’t you?]

It was striking. Jupiter was hard to miss though I had to do a double-take to make sure it was not Venus. Saturn is, of course, much smaller. I pulled out my ‘Google Pixel 5‘ phone & activated Google’s ‘Sky Map’ APP just to make sure.

I have a nasty feeling that tonight’s cloud will preclude us being able to see this conjunction.

It should be visible Saturday night too, i.e., September 18, 2021.

After that the configuration of the conjunction will shift. The moon will start drifting away to the East. On the 20th the three will be in a near straight-line. OK?
