‘Broadcom’ (AVGO) The One Stock That Warrants A Stock-Split In 2024 — But, Unlikely To Happen. SHAME!

I see all sorts of ‘pumpers & dumpers’ talking CRAZY stuff about 2024 stock splits — such as AMZN, NVDA, GOOG. None of those are likely to split in 2024. They all had splits in the last 2-years & their prices haven’t gone up that much. [I do OWN all three, & have for many, many, many YEARS. SMILE.]

‘Broadcom’, on the other hand, hasn’t split since 2006! They used to split quite regularly. Three times between 1999 & 2006. But, then they were acquired by ‘AVGO’ — & it appears that AVGO management does NOT believe in stock splits. Nothing that says they have to split. So, AVGO could go onto become a $2,000 or $3,000. I am OK with that. Yes, I own AVGO. I would like to own more, but at $1,000 it is an EXPENSIVE stock.

I like semis. Always. I understand semis. I only invest in stocks I understand.

I first bought Broadcom nearly a decade ago. Had a GREAT ride with them. They pay very handsome dividends. Then I had to (alas) SELL because I had become too greedy with my option calls. I wasn’t that upset. I had had a lovely run.

I then went for about 2-years without owning any. They were, of course, a tad expensive.

But, I missed owning AVGO & I knew they will continue to do well.

So, last year I started buying AVGO again. SMILE.

I now have, in terms of semis, NVDA, AVGO, ARM & AMD. Smile. I am comfortable with that position.

Just trying to help out. Save you having to go looking.

Yes, it is that time of year, when Option Trading addicts, like yours very truly, start thinking about LONG LEAPS. Yes, I am maxed out on SOME of my AMZN & GOOG options, i.e., December 2015. Not that concerned. I have done OK. But, I like to look forward, & quite literally keep my ‘options open‘!

In the back of my head I always know/remember that LEAP pricing, for large stocks like Amazon & Google, gets published in the Sept/Oct. timeframe. Just wanted to make sure.

September 11 is not that far out. Less than a month. It will be with us soon. Even I can be that patient. Enjoy.

‘French & Indian Encampment Weekend’, ‘Fort McClary’, Maine — June 17 – 18, 2023.

It was totally serendipitous. We went to ‘Fort McClary‘, one of our frequent ‘not-too-far‘, destinations for “Father’s Day” (this last Sunday).

We saw the sign even as we were driving to park. I was excited & I had good reason to be. I HAD A BALL. My kind of people. Great. Great. Great — even the French! {Smile}

They were super friendly & informative. I learnt, to my delight, that clogs were NOT restricted to the Dutch. Fancy that. All my time in Europe & I never knew that. I even learnt that they are called ‘Sabot’ in French & that is how we get the word ‘sabotage’! During the Industrial Revolution displaced, disgruntled peasants threw sabots at the machinery hoping to clog them up. Sabotage! Neat.

The couple playing the fife & drum were excellent.

I really enjoyed interacting with them. Quite the Father’s Day present. Thank YOU.

My Daughter’s College Fund Is ONLY Up 525% In 8-Years; I Hope YOUR Financial Advisor Is Doing BETTER.

It is NOT great BUT at least we have made a BIT of money. Always, BUT always, better than losing money.

I set this fund up for her, at ‘Fidelity‘, in 2015 when she was 9. After scrimping & saving I was able to give her (a mere) $13,500.

I was too poor then (& I still am) to hire a Financial Advisor. Plus they charge …. WOW_wee. Paying those kind of commissions, fees, etc. etc. etc. are FINE when you are rich. But, rich is only a word I read about.

I had NO idea as to what I was doing.

All I knew was that I would ONLY invest in things I KNEW & maybe used.

In 2006, a then 80(+) year old neighbor told me to buy AT LEAST 1 share of ‘Apple‘ (AAPL). I bought a ‘couple’. I had done OK with them by 2015. So, I bought some for my daughter.

I do 95% of my shopping on ‘Amazon‘. I had bought a ‘few’ AMZN shares in 2012 & was doing OK. So, I bought her a few.

‘Google’, ‘Microsoft’ & ‘Netflix‘ were no brainers. We used them. So, I bought her a few.

I have been in computers since 1969. I know a few things about computers. I was aware of ‘Nvidia’ (NVDA) & ‘BroadCom’ (AVGO). I had been using NVDA video cards in my PC for at least a decade. I bought her some.

Then I forgot about it. Yep, that is something else about my investing. I AM LAZY. Plus, I have never understood how to ‘SELL HIGH, BUY LOW‘. I just BUY, HOLD & FORGET.

Hence why we are not doing that GREAT. But, we are OK. We haven’t lost any money. So, I am happy.

Oh, to be able to AFFORD a good Financial Advisor. Well, that is like wishing I could afford silk underwear.

2022 Stock Splits Were BAD For AMZN & GOOG — They Attracted A Different Type Of Investor.

My contention, & it is just that, is that AMZN & GOOG would have fared BETTER in this down market IF NOT for the 20-to-1 splits!

Yes, of course, in early 2022 (i.e., last year) we all expected that AMZN & GOOG will go gangbusters after their 20-to-1 splits. LOT of folks bought these shares ahead of the splits on this assumption — which had been the case in prior, high-profile splits.

With interest rates shooting up (to curb inflation) this has been a difficult & down market. That is a given.

But, I am THINKING that AMZN & GOOG would have been more resilient IF NOT for the split. Why? The 20-to-1 split change the demographics of the ownership.

Prior to the split you basically had to be rich to own a chunk of AMZN or GOOG. When AMZN was $3,000 you needed $300,000 in order to own 100 shares. Not so after the split. You could own 100 for a mere $15,000.

AMZN & GOOG were no longer exclusive.

Let me be blunt. After the split, riff-raff were able to afford these shares. They trade differently than the more refined investor.

That is my thesis. We DEVALUED the ownership.

Just like a neighbourhood. If the prices drop by a factor of 20 the ownership profile will shift dramatically. That is my point.

I am not sure whether this can ever be tested or proved.

But, something to THINK about.

Google (GOOG) 2022 Stock Split Dates — July 1, 15 & 18.

Amazon 2022 stock-split dates for comparison.

June 1: The Google 2022 Annual Meeting where the VOTE the 20-to-1 stock split will be held.

Everyone is ASSUMING that this will go through. [Though I do own GOOG shares (and have for many years), I don’t own enough to bother voting. NOT SO when it comes to Amazon. Yes, I own much more AMZN than I do GOOG. SMILE.]

With the share price now hovering around $2,000 — over $800 down from when the split was announced — there is a (small) possibility that the vote might not go through! But, if that happens the stock price will now go down a further $250. So, I am fairly sure the 20-to-1 split will go through.

July: If the vote goes through, Friday, July 1, will be the NOMINAL EX-DIVIDEND (i.e., EX-SPLIT) date. It means diddly. Repeat. It means DIDDLY.

But, brokerages will claim that you need to own GOOG on July 1 in order to get the SPLIT. That is garbage. If you buy GOOG on July 3 what are the brokerages (& for that matter Google) going to do? Tell you own a special class of OLD, unsplit shares!

There is NO EX-SPLIT DAY. You can continue buying GOOG till the actual SPLIT DATE.

July 15: GOOG will split, 20-to-1, AFTER trading on this Friday. You will see the SPLIT shares on Saturday July 16.

July 18: The NEW split shares will start trading.

Got that. All depends on the vote going through.

They MIGHT delay these dates by a week or more. They have to happen on a Friday.

There is NO EX-SPLIT day — until the day the split happens. SMILE. [I have exploited this, & might do so again. Did so with TSLA. Bought AFTER the EX-SPLIT date when the prices dropped. SMILE.]

The Amazon (AMZN) 2022 stock split is taking place on a much more expedited (aggressive basis).

Google announced their 20-to-1 split in February 2022 — nearly a month ahead of Amazon. However, Amazon’s split will take place earlier.

You can also see that Amazon’s split is scheduled to take place RIGHT after the Annual Meeting. I will confess I was surprised to see that. Yes, it is all electronic now. So, it can be done quickly.

On the other hand Google is waiting a month after the Annual Meeting for the split. Yes, that will give time for folks to go ‘crazy’ about the stock.

But, now you have the dates & both calendars — for AMZN & GOOG.

We Just Voted ‘Yes’ (Of Course) For The 20-For-1 Amazon (AMZN) Stock Split.

Click to ENLARGE. My proxy vote.

Alas, we are NOT huge (and as such, major) Amazon shareholders. And it this case I am not using the Royal ‘we’. I & my youngest kids (at my behest) own Amazon stock — and have done so for many years. Between us we own a ‘few’ — alas, not millions or even thousands, but more than ‘xxx’ (& that is as specific as I will ever be in public).

So, we voted today for the 20-to-1 split. Given my 20 years of active investing, I am a past master of stock splits. I have gone through them all, both normal splits & reverse splits. I understand how they work better than some & I even have some secrets I no longer readily share as to how to make the most PRIOR to a split.

The BIG THING to I is the ADDITIONAL option trading. Many of you regulars know that option trading is one of my few addictions. A 20-to-1 split INCREASES my option trading scope 20-fold! If I own ‘xxx’ shares, I have the ability to trade ‘x’ options given that (‘proper’) option trading has to be done in terms of 100 share blocks. So, owning ‘xxx’ shares give you the chance to sell/buy ‘x’ options.

But then you get a 20-to-1 stock split. Now, rather than owning ‘xxx’ shares, I will own 20 times more. That means I can now play around with 20x options! WOW. That is exciting. So, much scope.

Yes, we also own GOOG & TSLA — though not as much as we own AMZN. So, this Summer is going to be like an early Christmas for I. WOW. SMILE. Actually GRIN. GRIN. GRIN.
