My New Business Cards (From ‘VistaPrint’).

The last time I ordered business cards (which were also from ‘VistaPrint’) was a few years ago (maybe 2019 or 2020). I was running out of cards (& I currently only have less than 20) & moreover, they were OUT-OF-DATE.

My old cards say ’30 books & counting’. Well, I am now up to 39.

I also wanted to highlight my NEW Website: guruge.com (& this blog, i.e., guruge.com/blog).

It also gave me a chance to be HONEST & not give ANY phone number, whatsoever. I do NOT like giving out my phone number. With these cards I don’t even make a pretense. No phone number. SMILE.

Funnily enough I ONLY ended up changing the FRONT of the card. Some of you will recognize the image, viz., West Quoddy Head Light, Lubec, Bold Coast, Maine. I, of course, had to have at least ONE Bold Coast image. And I succeeded. I was going to use a Bold Coast image on the back too but, in the end, reluctantly, changed my mind.

Yes, the image I have (which is the same as that from my old card) could easily pass as one of the Bold Coast — say, the ‘Ridge Trail’ at ‘Moose Cove‘. But, it isn’t. It is from Acadia & from quite a few years ago (& taken with a high-resolution camera). It still works, so I just changed the wording.

I should have the new cards by May 20. So, with luck, I should be armed with them when I next visit the Bold Coast around May 22.

Last Thursday, August 4, 2022, was very foggy in Lubec as I have already illustrated in these two posts: (1) Quoddy Head & (2) Boot Head Preserve. Well here are some pictures of Lubec per se from that evening & night. I was staying in downtown Lubec that night. And as some of you know I like to amble at night — & do so nightly wherever I may be. That said, I particularly like ambling around Lubec at night. It is quiet, quaint & picturesque. So, here are some pictures to illustrate that. Enjoy.

As attested in print above, ‘Boot Head Preserve‘ is my top pick on the ‘Bold Coast‘ — and that is saying something given how fond I am off the whole area.

As I pointed out in this post, there was pretty thick fog nearly all day up in the ‘Lubec‘ area (i.e., ‘Bold Coast‘) last Thursday, August 4, 2022. That was the densest & most persistent fog I had seen up there in all of my visits. After I had spent about 90 minutes at Quoddy, in the fog, I decided to make it to Boot Head to see what it was like in the fog. Well, here are some pictures. Enjoy.

Neat To See The ‘East Quoddy Light’ (Though NOT On The ‘Bold Coast’) Featured On A ‘Windows 10’ Lock Screen.

Click to ENLARGE. ‘West Quoddy Head’ light which, indeed, is on the ‘Bold Coast‘.

The middle figure above explains the irony here. The iconic, candy-striped ‘Quoddy Head‘ light, at the ‘Quoddy Head State Park’ sits at the designated easternmost point of the contiguous U.S. Its officially name, however, incongruous as it maybe, is ‘WEST Quoddy Head Light‘. That is because of the lighthouse pictured in the Windows 10 lock screen. It lies to the EAST of that at the State Park — but it is NOT in the U.S. That is the catch. It is on ‘Campobello Island’, in Canada. It, as you can see, is also a red & white lighthouse though this time the stripes are in the form of a tall cross. The red is to improve visibility in fog — a frequent occurrence in this area.

Pretty thick fog nearly all of the day up in the ‘Lubec‘ area (i.e., ‘Bold Coast‘) last Thursday, August 4, 2022. That was the densest & most persistent fog I had seen up there in all of my visits. It was cool. Another perspective. The Bold Coast is eerily quiet most of the time. The fog made the silence even more profound. It was quite the trip. I felt bad for a few folks I met who were just there for the day. Luckily all of them agreed that the fog was ‘cool’. That was good.

I have more Bold Coast fog pictures from that day & the next. I will post them over the next few days as time permits. Enjoy.

“Wallace Cove” At “Bailey’s Mistake”, The Latest “Bold Coast” Public Preserve — Sandy Beach & Boat Ramp.

Maine Coast Heritage Trust‘ (MCHT) acquired this 11-acre shorefront property in 2018.

Though it lacks the dramatic cliff views that characterizes the Bold Coast it is definitely in the 30-mile stretch of Downeast Coast — from Cutler Coast Public Land to Quoddy Head in Lubec — that is deemed the ‘Bold Coast’.

It is the only public sandy beach on this stretch. It is also the only boat ramp. So, that makes it special.

It is kind of a mini ‘Roques Bluffs‘ (without the freshwater pond).

It is off ‘Boot Cove Road’, the turning to ‘Wallace Cove’ just 0.5-mile from Route 191 junction. From the turn off the beach/boat ramp is just 0.1-mile away. So, it is easy to access.

It is a pretty, quiet location — albeit with at least 9 houses dotting the surrounding cove.

My Monitor Background On My New Windows 10 PC — Yes, It Is The ‘Bold Coast’.

My dual monitor setup for context.

I have been using my new ‘Windows 10‘ PC, from ‘AVADirect‘ as my main, work PC for the last 12 days. I am still sorting out some issues BUT the transition has not proved to be as traumatic as I had feared.

As I slowly go through all my options I decided to customize my PC background. Well, it was pretty obvious what I would opt for given all the thousands of images I have of the ‘Bold Coast‘. I liked this one.

In case you are wondering, it ‘Quoddy Head‘ but approaching it from the rarely ventured side, i.e., ‘Carrying Cove’.

Official State Map annotated to HIGHLIGHT the ‘Carrying Cove‘ entrance.

This NOT so that you can skip paying the $5 (or less), non-enforced (‘honor-system‘ based) ‘Quoddy Head State Park‘ Fees. I always make a point of giving more or paying multiple times. Quoddy Head is a National Treasure.

No, this back entrance is just a way to enjoy the amazing views available on the western side of the ‘Coastal Trail’ without having to hike all the way from the fabled lighthouse. Basically it is a shortcut to some of the better sights. That is it — & that is all.

Yes, it is worth visiting ‘Carrying Cove Beach‘ just to have a gander at its beauty. But, while you are at it, within 0.5 mile you can see some of the iconic views I show above. Hence, why I mention this.

Yes, there is a small brown sign for the beach on ‘South Lubec Road’ & two small pull-ins for cars. They are more or less where you see the start of the ‘flats’ when coming from the lighthouse. So, hard to miss.

The Last ‘First Sunrise’ At ‘Quoddy Head’, Maine, For 2021 (October 6) & I Had It All To Myself..

Well, I, having already created the table below (& publicized it), knew exactly what the dates were. So, I made sure I was in Lubec for the last few days.

I actually got up to Quoddy on the afternoon October 3, 2021. Given that I had got up early the day before I did NOT make an effort to get to Quoddy Head for sunrise on Monday, October 4th. I could have, but I opted to give it a miss.

I did, however, did get to Quoddy ahead of 6am on Tuesday, October 5th. There were about 10 people before I. I watched the first sunrise from the lighthouse. In the end there were about 10 cars in the car park & 30 (or so) folks. It was fun. Very collegiate.

But, I knew that Wednesday, October 6th was what would be truly special. The last first sunrise at Quoddy for the year. I was staying, quite literally, 5-minutes away. So, getting to Quoddy was not hard. I could even have walked in 20-minutes. But, I drove. Got there just after 6. Less people.

But, this time I did NOT bother trying to view it from the lighthouse. Instead, I immediately headed down the north (i.e., upper) leg of the ‘Coast Guard Trail’ (next to the lighthouse). I was heading towards the viewing platform. The day before I got a ‘bead’ on where the sun rose. So, I knew what angle I was seeking.

The platform is 0.5 mile into the trail. So, I knew I could get to it within 10-minutes. But, just before I got to the platform I spotted one of the cut-offs to a bluff. That looked to be just at the right angle. So, I went down it & made myself comfortable sitting on a rock outcrop.

The sun rose right in front of I — as the photos testify. No one else had bothered to venture down the trail. So, I had it all to myself. It was magical.

The above, categorically, is the definitive timetable. I did a lot of painstaking research (per my trademark) to get this nailed down. I was tired of seeing the inaccuracies.

So, dear ‘Quoddy‘ only has the honors for 28 days each year, around the two equinoxes (& if you know your astronomy, that makes eminent sense).

IF you have gone up ‘Cadillac‘ over the Summer (paying the new ‘Use Fee’) you have been DUPED. Cadillac has not been in the frame since March 6.

Never heard of ‘Mars Hill‘? Here is a map, also from my book.

You have to blame the Canadians for why it is Mars Hill rather than Cadillac during the summer. Has to do with hills casting shadows.

IF I can get everything squared off with the book, & the weather cooperates, I am hoping to make a trip up the Bold Coast to see first sunrise at Quoddy prior to October 7th. IF I can do October 6th that would be neat.

I did make it to Cadillac last October 20 (i.e., 2020) see the First Sunrise.
