Going to this always delightful, ‘Holiday Open House‘, just 1.8 miles from our place, is now an entrenched & beloved, ANNUAL Thanksgiving Tradition for us. It is hosted by a real lovely family that we have come to know over the years. This was probably the 10th or 11th year that we have gone to this Open House. Check here for the pictures from 2022. We obviously didn’t go in 2021 because of COVID.

Last year, because of other commitments we couldn’t get there till the Sunday. It was nearly empty by then. This year the ‘girls’ were determined to get there as early as possible — taking into account that one of them doesn’t move that quickly early in the morning. They set 9:30 as departure time & we made it. Even then, getting there within 40 minutes of them opening, it was BUSY. But, they had fun. They, as always, bought stuff.

I just go to take pictures — & then walk back. Nice walk & today was a gorgeous, not-too-cold day.

Happy Thanksgiving 2023 To You All. Enjoy. Be Thankful. Indulge.

Last Time Thanksgiving (U.S.) Fell On November 23 As In 2023 Was …

Just 6 years ago. So, not that long. A 6 or 5 year gap between U.S. Thanksgiving falling on the same day is the norm. (The 11-year gaps are due to Leap Years.)

U.S. Thanksgiving (the ONLY ‘Thanksgiving’ of import & meaning as far as I am concerned, the others being but shameless efforts at imitation), as of 1941, is ALWAYS on a Thursday — the 4th Thursday of November. As such, it can occur between November 22 to November 28.

This year, i.e., 2023, it occurs close to the start of that range, i.e., November 23.

Kind of neat that in 2023 Thanksgiving is on the 23rd.

Getting Chinese Takeout, In The ‘Rochester’ (N.H.) Area, At Thanksgiving & Christmas Is Getting Increasingly Challenging!

We like Chinese at Thanksgiving & Christmas. It is a long-standing tradition. In the early days we used to go out for it. Then we settled on takeout (even prior to COVID).

During the last few years, this year & last in particular, it has been beyond crazy trying to order takeout.

THEY HAVE BEEN SWAMPED.

At Thanksgiving only ‘China Palace‘ was open. They just couldn’t handle the demand. They tried. They just were overwhelmed.

Ditto, today, Christmas. They couldn’t even get to the phone. There were 2 hour waits for takeout. Yes, we finally managed to get some (not exactly what we wanted given the menus had been curtailed) though it was a STRUGGLE.

We will have to think of alternative approaches next year.

Going to this always delightful, ‘Holiday Open House’, hosted by a real lovely family, has been a firm ‘Thanksgiving’ tradition with us for the last nine or ten years. Once we discovered it, we have been going, faithfully & with glee, every year bar the absence forced by COVID-19. They, however, have been holding this multi-vendor Open House for longer. This, bar COVID, was probably their 18th, if not 19th. IF it was the 20th I am sure we would have seen some signage. I bet, the BIG 20 is next year.

Not far from our house, about 1.8-miles (I think). I walked back & gotting in all my steps for the day in the process.

We typically go around lunchtime ‘Black Friday’. We couldn’t this year. We had other commitments both Friday & Saturday. This morning, i.e., Sunday, was the only time we could make it. As we had feared most of the stuff had already been sold. That was what we had expected. On the other hand, it wasn’t mobbed either. I heard that it was packed all day yesterday. So, there was that. We could take our time slowly wending through the rooms (all with exquisite pastoral views).

It was, as always, good & rewarding. We bought a few things. SMILE. Now looking forward to next year.

Stock Markets Closing Early On ‘Black Friday’ Is A Ill-Conceived, Meaningless Gesture Which Is Neither ‘Here-Nor-There’.

Yes, of course, I understand the gesture, the goal. It is to give the folks on ‘Wall Street’ a long-weekend to coincide with Thanksgiving. I get that.

But, making them come in for 1/2 a day, when Thursday was a full holiday makes it silly.

So, they get Thursday off, but have to come in on Friday till 1pm (or 2pm).

Yes, I assume that those that can, just take the Friday off. That then does give them a full 4-day break.

I like to trade daily. I missed out today because I had stuff to do this morning. But, I don’t have a problem if the markets are closed, ALL DAY, on Black Friday. We can survive. In a way, it is good. A break from trading. A time to take stock, quite literally, reflect & think of where you want to go next.

This 1pm close bugs me every Black Friday. Things that don’t make sense rankle I.

That is all. I just wanted to go on record. SMILE. I am now done (till next year).

Making A Point Of Saying ‘THANK YOU’ Throughout The Year, Rather Than Just, Mindlessly, At Thanksgiving.

Click image to access my heartfelt October 2021 post about MANNERS.

It amazes & saddens me how poor manners (aka bad manners) is rapidly becoming today’s norm. It never used to be like this. People used to automatically say ‘please‘ & ‘thank you‘. Now, on a near daily basis, I am finding that more & more people have real trouble being able to say ‘THANK YOU’. Some are so ignorant or self-absorbed that they don’t even realize/know that they should say ‘thank you’. Others appear to be embarrassed to say ‘THANK YOU’. I don’t get it. In my 2nd image above I highlight the salient facts.

IF you have trouble saying ‘THANK YOU’, you have some deep seated, profound psychological issues. Not being able to say ‘THANK YOU’ shows tremendous insecurity! Yep.

I genuinely feel bad for folks who don’t say ‘THANK YOU’. I laugh at them, in my head in their presence, & then make fun of them, with my family, in private. I also now have a new resolution. If a person doesn’t say THANK YOU, I quietly cut them off from my life. I don’t say anything to them. I just block them from my life, quite literally. I am not going to waste my time explaining stuff to them or hearing their sorry explanations. I just block them. Many don’t even realize that I am done with them. Through. That is OK. I don’t want to insult them. I don’t have the time for ‘discussions’. I just don’t have the time or patience for folks that can’t say ‘THANK YOU’.

Just my opinion. You can do whatever you wish. But, IF you don’t say ‘THANK YOU’ when you should have, you will never hear from me again. SMILE. Enjoy.

If you read this, or even glanced at it, I THANK YOU. Cheers.

This is a GOOD deal. Thank YOU ‘TDS‘ — & yes, we have ‘TDS TV‘ & also get our 1G Internet & landline from them.

From what I recall TDS does these previews a couple of times a year — & yes, I think they try always have one around Thanksgiving. That is cute & nice.

So, IF you have TDS make sure to avail yourself to this deal. No credit cards. HBO & Cinemax channels will appear in your guide. I can’t remember which channels — but I think they are in the ‘2000’ or higher range. Start at 2000 and look around.

Enjoy.
