My LIST. My choices. My criteria.
You do not have to agree. That is perfectly fine by me. I respect your opinion (even if I think you may be wrong).
I have given this more thought than most of you appreciate.
Wilton Gregory can pull together quite the coalition — support from many geographies. He is not a hardliner. His age, at 77, is Goldilocks — not too old, not too young.
I am COMFORTABLE with him at #4 in MY LIST.
It will be SO NEAT IF he keeps his name and opts to be ‘Gregory XVII‘.
Given the extreme conservatism of Gregory XVI,a number of ultraconservative antipopes have chosen the name Gregory XVII as a token of wanting to go back to the days of the Papal States and G-XVI’s policies…for Wilton G. to choose that name would be curious.

I just happen to have the MOST COMPREHENSIVE & BEST list of antipopes EVER. I spent 3 months, 18-months ago compiling it. I was going to write the DEFINITIVE works on APs. Much of what has been written about them is TRIP & the lists are WRONG.

No Antipopes named GVII. [I do mean LEGITIMATE APs. With APs, as I can prove, we have legitimate and illegitimate APs. BUT, there are NO GVIIs on ANY LIST & I found All the lists that I can find.]
There were TWO GXIVs — both illegitimate (in that they were NOT truly APs).
GXVI was recent. NO APs since the 15th century!

If Wilton opts to be GXVII everybody (bar YOU) will appreciate that he did SO because he wanted to KEEP HIS OWN NAME. It would not be an issue.

Antipopes have a predictable but off-putting habit of calling themselves Catholics,I would never do that.
