Changes in 2024

The NEW ‘Cardinals’ site UPDATED with these new images/tables.

What I have done is added ‘who created whom‘ data. I like to have that. I was rather surprised to find that Salvador did NOT provide these numbers on a regular or consistent basis. Given all the data I have, & my still somewhat ‘OK’ numeracy, it wasn’t that difficult to interpolate back to January 1, 2023. From that point it was just grunt work. Some of you will find this data interesting & useful. It shows how the influence of the 3 popes ebbs and flows.

This is still a work in progress. Unlike dear Salvador I have other interests, other projects, other commitments …. But, please give me time. I will slowly improve on what we have. IF you can HELP, please let me know. Thanks.

I Agree With ‘Cardinal Parolin’ That “Pope Francis'” Reforms, Whether Good Or Bad, Will Prevail.

Basically, what Cardinal Parolin & I are both saying is that it is unlikely that the Next Pope, even if he is NOT a ‘Francis II‘ (e.g., American Burke), will overturn ALL the reforms enacted by Francis. The best that might happen is that he might AGAIN (a la Benedict XVI) relax the barriers to celebrating the Latin Mass. I am sure the other reforms will remain on the books due to the respect that new popes pay to their predecessors. This has to do with the decorum exercised by modern popes. Quickly overturning prior reforms look undignified. And that is the rub.

IF the Next Pope is a traditionalist he is unlikely to have too much time. A non-Francis II will only get enough votes if he is seen as a compromise, caretaker pope — not likely to hang around for much more than 7 to 8 years. While that may sound like a lot, that probably isn’t enough leeway to OVERTURN Francis’ reforms without making Francis look real bad.

IF a Francis II is elected, the whole issue is moot. I have a feeling that Francis will hold another cardinal creating consistory in August or September this year & create 20 to 22 cardinal electors. IF he does that (& Parolin might already know of the pope’s plans) it is GAME OVER. The Next Pope will be Francis II — possibly even Tagle!

So, that is the lay of the land. If the next pope is NOT a Francis II we might see some slack cut on Latin Mass. But, that will be about it. But, as ever, I could be wrong.

While I have NO intention of trying to emulate ALL that dear Salvador did, I do want to try and maintain an ACCURATE record of the CHANGES to the College.

Salvador’s website will EVER remain good for everything
UP TO 2023.

What I will do is maintain a list (in the form of one of my famed ‘magic’ Excel spreadsheets) of all the changes — i.e., creations, deaths, aging outs & expulsions — as of Jan. 1, 2023. So, this is the start.

The spreadsheet is done. It has some HIDDEN columns. Plus, I plan to add a few more. No point maintaining a magic Guruge spreadsheet IF I don’t milk as much data as I can. I will calculate days between changes, days between deaths, obituary demographic, etc.

This is still a work in progress. Unlike dear Salvador I have other interests, other projects, other commitments …. But, please give me time. I will slowly improve on what we have. IF you can HELP, please let me know. Thanks.

This is in memory of my friend Salvador.

I dedicated my 2020, encyclopedic, 518-page ‘The Conclave‘ book to Salvador.

I am glad I did. He was chuffed.

I have ALREADY created a Webpage for MY ‘College of Cardinals’. More on that later. This is but a start. SMILE.

Keeping The ‘Salvador Miranda’ Cardinal Obituary List ALIVE.

Keeping dear Salvador’s list up to-date.

It is now close to a year since dear Salvador’s invaluable ‘Cardinals’ Website went dark.

During this time I have made numerous attempts to directly contact Salvador (via phone & e-mail) and to get an update on him. I have failed, miserably. I fear the worst. I check the local papers. Nothing that I can find. IF you know something please let me know.

By now the Website is out-of-date when it comes to what has happened in the last 11 months.

There is NO way I can update it.

But, as YOU know I am providing comprehensive Cardinal Elector demographics — with detail not even available on the Website. So, that helps (& is a consolation).

I needed to look up some necrology stuff. Of course, I couldn’t, any longer, rely on Salvador’s list. Yes, both ‘gcatholic’ & ‘catholic hierarchy’ have necrology lists — but they are NOT restricted just to cardinals. I just want the cardinals. Truth be known, I just want the cardinal electors.

So, starting today I will maintain a CARDINAL OBITUARY list. This is the start. I will put the 21st century data, from Salvador, into a spreadsheet & then BUILD upon that. OK?

Do YOU Remember ‘Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr’?

I did write about him in August 2022.

He was a classic example of a prelate CREATED in absentia — i.e., created a cardinal though he did NOT attend the conclave.

Click to access my August 2022 post.

He fell ill as soon as he landed in Rome for the consistory. As I show in my post, the pope talked about it at the consistory.

ALAS, he was NOT to be a cardinal for long. He died EXACTLY 3 months after he was created. Yes, created August 27, 2022, died November 27, 2022. 3 months. Appears he had heart issues — had had heart surgery & had only been released from hospital a few days before he died. HE WAS YOUNG. Just 63.

So, why am I talking about him today?

He is the LAST Cardinal Elector to have passed away.

He passed away 17 months ago (i.e., 523 days).

That was the last time we had attrition of a Cardinal Elector — other than from aging out.

I went & checked. That is atypical.

We had 2 cardinal electors pass away in 2021.

But none in 2023.

This, of course, good.

I am keeping CLOSE tabs of cardinal elector demographics & want to make sure I don’t miss anything.

‘Russian Orthodox Church’ Makes It Very Clear That It Is Ultra-Partisan.

I happened to hear of this 3-year suspension of the Priest who attended poor “Alexei Navalny’s” burial on the BBC yesterday — & was quite shocked. I don’t pay that much attention to this Church and as such had NOT realized that it was flagrantly & unashamedly partisan. Wow. Quite the thing.

I know that Pope Francis has had some dealings with ‘Patriarch Kirill‘. I find it hard to comprehend how the Catholic Church could reconcile this level of partisanship — in the 21st century. But, then again they had the Papal States. Plus, as we kind of suspect, Francis is somewhat sympathetic with Russia.

Well, this is outside of my real scope of interest & coverage — BUT I wanted to make sure that you heard about it. Now you have.

IF ‘Pope Francis’ Is Well Enough To Travel To Asia, He Should Convene A Consistory BEFORE He Leaves.

For the last few months I have been advocating that Francis really should hold another cardinal creating consistory to CEMENT HIS legacy as the pope who modernized the Catholic Church and brought it, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century (albeit with no concessions to transgender folks).

Per the current cardinal elector demographics the NEXT POPE will end up as centrist — somebody in the middle.

Neither camp, i.e., the reformists (i.e., Francis‘ acolytes) nor the traditionalists (i.e., those led by U.S. Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke) have sufficient votes to gain the 67% supre-majority needed to get a new pope. The Francis camp is short by AT LEAST 10. That, on paper, he created the 73% of the current slate of electors means diddly. They are NOT all going to vote for ‘Franic II’.

Francis needs to create AT LEAST 22 young, radical REFORMISTS. This is his LAST CHANCE to make a difference. Make sure the Church is RE-FORMED.

Francis has held an August consistory. He should do it AGAIN. Create 22 (or more) electors. Then he could rest knowing he has done his job.

“Marc Ouellet’s” Conviction By A French Court Obliterates (Alas) His Papabile Prospects.

The legality and ‘properness’ of this French verdict means didly.

This is getting publicity and it hurts his image, reputation & credibility.

Two key factors also at play here. TOO CLOSE to the conclave & just as he is turning 80.

It is conceivable that he might have been able to overcome this setback IF it had happened 4 years ago.

France is a MAJOR Catholic country and we cannot have a new pope who has been FINED by a French court.

This is ALSO a major blow to I — though I appreciate that none of you care about that.

Ouellet was one of my TOP papabili picks (just like he had been in 2011).

Now I had to go and redo the WHOLE list.

But, it is good for another of my favorites, U.S. Cardinal Wilton Gregory. He is now at #3! Wow. O’Malley is another favorite.

I do feel bad for Ouellet. He always seemed to be so much in control. Getting involved in this seems like a mistake. I can’t say I understand all the nuances, but it would appear that he was outside of his jurisdiction.

‘Pope Francis’ Again Embracing The ‘Patriarch Of The West’ Title, Discarded 18 Years Ago, Makes NO SENSE.

by Anura Guruge
on April 13, 204

The only person that could convince me that Francis is SMARTER than Benedict XVI is ‘Georg Gänswein‘ — who directly served BOTH popes.

To be fair I don’t think Francis, old & feeble, had much to do with this. He, like ‘Biden’, seems awfully confused & disoriented much of the time.

That the title is ONLY included in the ‘Annuario Pontifico‘ (Pontifical Yearbook) list of ‘Historic Titles‘ gives me heart.

Yes, we can’t deny that ‘Patriarch of the West’ is indeed an ‘historic title’. That might be what this is all about. Just keeping the facts right.

But, Benedict XVI relinquished the title for a reason — later CODIFIED by the Vatican.

This is just a unnecessary distraction. I am not going to bother saying much beyond this. It is an historic title. I can live with that.
