2024 Spring Equinox In New Hampshire Will Be TODAY, i.e., Tuesday, March 19, 11:06 PM Tonight (Eastern).

The Spring Equinox can happen on March 19, 20 or 21.

So, March 19 seems a tad only. But, notice it is happening LATE AT NIGHT. Already March 20 in Greenwich, England. It was also on March 19 in 2020. So, not that rare. But, for us in New Hampshire, it falls most often on March 20.

Last year it was ULTRA SNOWY. This year NO SNOW — ice out (earliest on record) already declared.

Note that daylight is NOT exactly 12 hours!
If anything we get closer to 12 hours 3 days earlier.
There is a reason for that. It is our latitude above the equator.
If we were closer to the equator it would have been closer to 12 hours.
See this explanation in
Time-and-Date.

As has been my custom for years let me also please share at least ONE alluring ‘Allegory of Spring‘.

Lake Winnipesaukee (NH) 2024 Ice-Out: Sunday, March 17 — EARLIEST EVER (Since Records Started To Be Kept In 1887).

Click to ENLARGE. Ice-outs this century. From an Excel spreadsheet I maintain. Wow. This is special. As I explain below Leap Years have significance. Makes this record SPECIAL.

I take LEAP YEARS into account.
This year is a LEAP YEAR.
So, March 17 this year,
in terms of days since Jan. 1,
is day # 76. If it had NOT been a Leap Year
it would have been day #75.
{Get that. Leap years make a difference}

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This is amazing. Yes, warmest winter ever. This is crazy.

If this hadn’t been a Leap Year this would have been Day #75!

First ever, of course, on St. Patrick’s Day. How special.

I Am Not Going To Get Excited About (Or Make Plans) For The April 8, 2024 ‘Total Eclipse’ Until I Know The Weather.

You will be able to see the TOTAL eclipse from Northern New Hampshire. People will be flocking in from all over the place. I am not too worried about that. I know how to get up north via the back roads. SMILE. So, traffic & crowds, I hope, will not be an issue.

My only concern is WEATHER.

As far as I recall we, in New Hampshire, missed the 2019 eclipse because of weather.

So, I am going to wait until I can, at a minimum, see the 10-day forecast. Then I will start formulating a plan. I will let you know.

Bald Eagle On Half-Frozen ‘Merrymeeting River’, ‘Alton’, N.H. — Valentine’s Day, 2024.

Lucked out. Made my day. But, I made some of that luck myself. I was driving past the lake ~2:25pm today when I saw two large, distinctively colored birds perched on the ice. Kind of had a hunch that they might be eagles. So, I TURNED AROUND, came back, parked across the road & walked over.

One the eagles took off when it saw me approaching — though I was a good 400 yards away (or thereabouts). The other one stayed, oblivious.

I have seen bald eagles before, in N.H., Maine & Arizona. But, it is always a TREAT. I was happy. Glad I turned around.

Using A Summer Straw Hat To TRY And Keep The Snow Away. [Didn’t Work Too Well.]

I didn’t want to wear rain gear with a hood. Was just looking for something with a WIDE BRIM that would go over my (now ESSENTIAL) TRUSTY Russian fur hat. I wanted to keep as much of the snow off the fur. The fur hat is BULKY. So, didn’t have anything that would properly go over it.

This straw hat was the biggest I had. It also had a strap — which meant I could make sure it stayed on.

Well, as you can see, it didn’t work too well. But, I was OK. Light snow. It wasn’t that bad.

Voting For The Very 1st Time In The U.S. — & I Voted For A Republican!

A RED LETTER day for I — one I really didn’t think would ever be. Glad I did.

Voting for the first time since 1982! I missed voting. Never missed voting in an election when I lived in the U.K. I am a born political creature.

Well, I finally got U.S. Citizenship (after 38 years) so that I could VOTE. So, I did — the first chance I had. Came back early from Acadia just to vote.

Kind of upset & disappointed that it is a PRETTY MEANINGLESS vote.

Democratic votes don’t count & ‘Trump‘ will win the Republican vote in N.H. & in the U.S.

When I heard that ‘DeSantis’ had dropped out I was very discouraged.

Voted for ‘Nikki Haley‘ as a VOTE AGAINST Trump.

After saying that I will CONFESS that I could live with Nikki Haley as President.

I am USED to Female Heads-of-State.

I would vote for her RATHER than ‘Joe Biden‘ in November! Yes, I would.

I will NOT VOTE for Biden. I like him a LOT. Loved him in 2008, 2012 & 2020. But, NOT so in 2024. He is TOO OLD. He is TOO WEAK. He is NOT PROTECTING the Border.

My life has probably been EVENLY SPLIT between being a Conservative/Republican & a Democrat. I definitely have Republican tendencies. SMILE.

‘Kathmandu Bazaar’, Concord, NH — Ideal For A Light Indian Lunch.

Today was my second time for lunch there, be it 4-years apart — BUT we did have COVID intervening. I like it — which obviously is why I went back.

Light fare. Not your full Indian/Nepali menu. Small kitchen. One person doing all the work. Kind of self-serve from the counter. Informal.

But, it is GOOD. Only 3 small tables and a few stools at the counter. No wine.

I was meeting a friend for lunch. It as at 1pm. So the place wasn’t that busy. Yes, people coming and going but we had a quiet table for an in-depth chat. I ordered some extra Samosas and Momo to bring home.

Given that I avoid carbs, this is menu is good for me — though Samosas (one of my many weaknesses) is, of course, NOT good for I. Smile.

I Hope This NOT The Partial Remains Of The Deer We Rescued From The Lake!

This is just a PORTION of a deer. One leg and a bit. NOT what is left from a roadkill. Definitely looks like what was LEFT after the rest was ripped and EATEN. Maybe coyotes and we have coyotes and foxes.

Alas NOT far from the Lake from which we rescued the other deer.

I first saw these remains 3 days ago. It was fresh then, with a tinge of blood and no snow. But, I couldn’t take a picture that day because it was raining cats & dogs and I was trying to keep my phone dry.

I didn’t go past there yesterday. I did NOT expect to see the remains there today. Caught me by surprise. WOW.

Well I wanted to share with you. Keeping fingers crossed. The deer we rescued was very weak.

In the scheme of things I stayed pretty ‘local’. Didn’t go that far. Google says I drove close to 11,000 miles. That sounds right.

I had FORGOTTEN some of these trips. Wow.

So, it was all confined to 4 States (not counting my home state of New Hampshire) — viz. Maine, Vermont, New York & Massachusetts. Lot of NEW places for I. I am glad. I am happy. But, I am always happy. SMILE.

Two YouTube videos I took.

I had sent them the YouTube videos & they asked permission. Actually we had about a 6 e-mail exchange. They wanted to make sure.

This is cool.

I went and checked for the deer on the beach today. No sign of it. That is good. IT definitely got up, after the 2nd REST, and moved.
