So, so GLAD & relieved that we got a big ‘Generac‘ last Summer. WOW. Could NOT have dealt with this without that.

Crazy. SECOND 24+ hour plus outage in 2 weeks. This is climate change.

That it came back and then went OFF was frustrating. I didn’t have to do anything. Generac comes on by itself. Felt bad for those with portable generators. Luckily many around here had just kept theirs going.

Met some of the crew restoring power. They were from Kentucky! They had flown to Connecticut and then come over in CT trucks. Very nice. Showed me one of the blown fuses. I gave them chocolates. Least I could do.

Also lent one of our portable generators to a neighbor who didn’t have a generator. That was good — though they got power back 2 hours later. Always the case. When we first got our generators … sister-in-law and husband drove from Maine with them (purchased from Sears). 20 minutes after they arrived, before we could even unload the boxes, power was back.

Not sure IF we are out of the woods yet. Lot of snow on trees.

But, glad we have had power, uninterrupted, for 6 hours. Fingers crossed.

In The Midst Of A Monster Snowstorm. 20″+ Wet/Heavy Snow. No Power. Fenced In By Snow.

Biggest snowstorm of THIS winter. Yes, I was waiting for this. Winter, so far, especially February, had been way, way too mild. So, I knew we would pay for it.

And we sure are paying for it today … into tomorrow … & most likely Saturday.

Lots of heavy, wet snow. Just chews up the snowblowers.

Lost power at 4:40am. 12-hours ago. Doubt whether we will get it restored before Saturday — possibly Sunday! Glad we now have a ‘Generac‘. Hope it can cope. If it fails we are screwed.

It is still snowing today and will continue into Friday. WOW. Haven’t had a storm like this in years. I hope we SURVIVE.

IF you don’t see any posts, it means we are BURIED. Send search parties with FOOD. Thanks.

Fenced In By Snow!

This is WILD. We have had this chainlink fence, a huge (house-size) pen for (dear) ‘Rowen‘ since 2021. Never seen it like this. WOW.

We have had close to 20″ of snow since yesterday evening. Still snowing. I have plowed twice and I still have more. Crazy. You can see the build up on top of the fence.

But this was COOL. Snow blown up against the chainlink. COOL.

Good Friday sunset last year, i.e., 2023.
But, that was a week later, April 7, 2023.

Not bad, eh? We do get spectacular sunsets this time of the year. My window, next to my desk looks out NNW.

Yes, I kind of get blasse to them THOUGH I know I shouldn’t. Today I made a point of taking this picture. I wanted to share it with you. Enjoy.

First Crocuses Of 2024 In OUR Yard.

First crocuses of 2023 (in our yard) — April 7, 2023.

I am AMAZED. As you can see from one picture we still have snow on the ground — adjacent to these flowering crocuses.

I was NOT expecting to see any flowers. I wanted to see if any SHOOTS had come up, under the snow.

THEN I SAW THE FLOWERS. I was floored, BUT happy.

But, we are expecting ANOTHER MAJOR SNOWSTORM on Wednesday!

This crocus bed is usually the FIRST to bloom each year. It faces East and as such gets a lot of sun. The bed does well as long as I don’t shovel a ton of snow on top of it from the the driveway. As we know we didn’t have that much snow this winter. That sure was a factor. Over a WEEK EARLY!

2024 Spring Equinox In New Hampshire Will Be TODAY, i.e., Tuesday, March 19, 11:06 PM Tonight (Eastern).

The Spring Equinox can happen on March 19, 20 or 21.

So, March 19 seems a tad only. But, notice it is happening LATE AT NIGHT. Already March 20 in Greenwich, England. It was also on March 19 in 2020. So, not that rare. But, for us in New Hampshire, it falls most often on March 20.

Last year it was ULTRA SNOWY. This year NO SNOW — ice out (earliest on record) already declared.

Note that daylight is NOT exactly 12 hours!
If anything we get closer to 12 hours 3 days earlier.
There is a reason for that. It is our latitude above the equator.
If we were closer to the equator it would have been closer to 12 hours.
See this explanation in
Time-and-Date.

Click to ENLARGE. Ice-outs this century. From an Excel spreadsheet I maintain. Wow. This is special. As I explain below Leap Years have significance. Makes this record SPECIAL.

I take LEAP YEARS into account.
This year is a LEAP YEAR.
So, March 17 this year,
in terms of days since Jan. 1,
is day # 76. If it had NOT been a Leap Year
it would have been day #75.
{Get that. Leap years make a difference}

Wow. Wow. Wow.

This is amazing. Yes, warmest winter ever. This is crazy.

If this hadn’t been a Leap Year this would have been Day #75!

First ever, of course, on St. Patrick’s Day. How special.

I remember the March 14, 2023, snowstorm vividly. It was a monster storm.

My U.S. Citizenship Interview, which had already been postponed once (2 weeks earlier), because of another snowstorm, was the next day. I was waiting for them to call to say that it was postponed again. Didn’t happen.

I had to shovel 3 times, early in the morning, because we had SO, SO MUCH snow.

And this year. NOTHING.

This is NOT RIGHT. This is SCARY. We are going to pay for this.

I am sure we will have at least ONE BIG snowstorm before Spring.

Cacophony Of Squawking Birds In Our Backyard This Morning.

It was VERY LOUD. I could hear it in the shower (even with the water running).

I first thought that it was ‘peepers‘ (i.e., baby frogs) but I didn’t think we could have that many, to make such a racket, in our backyard since it is not wetlands.

Appears it was birds. All I could see were crows, i.e., black birds. Didn’t sound like them.

I need to find out more. Wanted to share. It is raucous.

I Am Not Going To Get Excited About (Or Make Plans) For The April 8, 2024 ‘Total Eclipse’ Until I Know The Weather.

Click to ENLARGE. Map from ‘NASA‘.

You will be able to see the TOTAL eclipse from Northern New Hampshire. People will be flocking in from all over the place. I am not too worried about that. I know how to get up north via the back roads. SMILE. So, traffic & crowds, I hope, will not be an issue.

My only concern is WEATHER.

As far as I recall we, in New Hampshire, missed the 2019 eclipse because of weather.

So, I am going to wait until I can, at a minimum, see the 10-day forecast. Then I will start formulating a plan. I will let you know.
