I saw this on Facebook today. Got me curious. Didn’t look like an American Eagle. I am NO expert, but I have seen quite a few American eagles and kind of have a feel for what they look like. So, I did a bit of research. It looked like a HAWK to I. I used ‘Google Lens’. It immediately said ‘Red-Shouldered Hawk‘. I followed up. Looks like a pretty good match.

Yes, it appears that there are ‘eagles’ that look a BIT like that around the world, BUT not in the U.S.

Let me know IF I am wrong. Always happy to learn. Thanks.

‘Cardinal Christophe Pierre’, Nuncio To The U.S., Newly Created, Could Be Papabile. Ideal Compromise.

by Anura Guruge
on December 22, 2023

When I was updating my Cardinal Elector spreadsheet his name & credentials jumped out at me. Papal Nuncio to the (ever so important) U.S. since 2016. 7-years. That for a nuncio is a fair chunk of time. As far as I can see he hasn’t put a foot wrong, either in the U.S. or in Rome, during that time. That is good. He also has had stints in Brazil, Cuba and Africa. Plus the Holy See representative to the U.N. SO, it would appear that he might be able to cobble together votes from France, U.S., Brazil, Cuba, Africa and the curia.

He is also not too old or too young! He will be 78 in January 2024. That was the age that Benedict XVI was elected in 2005. Francis was 76.2 & John XXIII was 76.9. So, he can’t be ruled out as being too old.

Think about it. Mull it over. Do some research. Let me know.

Last Time ‘Labor Day’ Fell On September 4, As It Does This Year, Was 6 Years Ago (i.e., 2017).

It is always the 1st Monday of September. So, it can fall between September 1 & September 7 — & as my table above shows, it has.

So, September 4 is smack in the middle.

It last fell on September 4, 6 years ago, i.e., 2017.

6 years gaps are the norm for this kind of fixed-day, yearly holidays — given we have 7 days in a week. So, we also had 6 year gaps between 1989 & 1995 as well as 2000 & 2006.

What breaks up these nice, convenient 6 year gaps are LEAP YEARS. Note that 2000 was a leap year. That messed up the sequence. Hence, the 5 year gap between 1995 & 2000.

Then 2010 was a leap year. That messed things up again to give us the 11 year gap between 2006 & 2017. 11 year gaps are also not that common. WHY 11 YEARS? 7 days in a week & 4 years between leap years.

September 4 is a rather special day. It is most famous for being the day that the ICONIC car, THE ‘Edsel‘, was launched in 1957.

Google‘ & ‘Kodak’ were formed on September 4, though a few years apart.

‘Fitch’ Downgrading Of U.S. Credit Rating, This Morning, Was Disgracefully Disingenuous & Blatantly Bogus.

From ‘Google News‘.

From ‘Google News‘.

There has to be a mechanism whereby they can be held ACCOUNTABLE. This was totally irresponsible & utterly reprehensible. There was NO need for this — currently.

This was shouting ‘FIRE’ in a crowded theater. Yes, they caused the markets to stampede — to the exits. That, to be honest, is NOT my gripe. Like all good investors, & especially option traders, I like a GOOD DOWN DAY. I bought more NVDA & made a few (more) bucks rolling options. But, people, decent people, lost a lot of money today — & some would have panicked.

This was, as some eagerly pointed out this morning on CNBC, nothing but Fitch trying to get 15-minutes of ‘glory’. Shameless. Pathetic company.

There has to be a way that they can be punished for this irresponsible act.

This Unexpected & Marked DROP In U.S. Life Expectancy Has To Be Related To Gun Violence.

Something else I learnt from the U.K. ‘Daily Mail’ which I read, online, multiple times a day. Had not seen this anywhere else & it is worth pondering.

This does NOT ring true to me. It really does NOT. Does it ring true with you.

People, especially in the U.S., are living longer and longer.

I lead a fairly isolated & secluded life, so I appreciate my outlook is somewhat biased BUT I really don’t encounter that many deaths. In the last year I can’t think of anyone I associate with or who I know who died! Most folks I know just go on living.

I have to think that this NEW LOW number, IF TRUE, must be related to gun violence & fatalities therein. That is the only thing that would make sense. Young people getting killed by guns.

Your thoughts. This was too important not to bring it to your attention.

‘American Factory’ (2019) ‘Netflix’ Documentary Which Depicts A Very True Story Is Sobering, Thought-Provoking & Most Of All SCARY!

When you are watching this documentary you realize, conclusively, why China is such a dominant power when it comes to manufacturing & why China intends to be the most powerful superpower in the Universe.

I have known & worked with non-American Chinese. While they have always been super friendly, helpful etc. you always get the feeling that they are working per a bigger, master plan. There is always a hint of ruthlessness lurking.

This documentary shows a HUGE, unbridgeable gulf between the U.S. & China when it comes to the PEOPLE.

What struck me the most was how UNHEALTHY the Americans looked compared to 95% of the Chinese. Most of the Chinese workers & mid-tier management look super healthy — though quite a few smoked. And then there is their commitment, dedication & drive. Wow. No wonder they have achieved so much. That is what makes this scary. How do you compete with them? Not sure Indians, push-comes-to-shove, are a match.

Very sobering. China has a plan. China has a Master Plan. China has a Strategic Master Plan. Based on this documentary I am not sure how the U.S. can stop them at least in the arena of manufacturing.

This is a DOCUMENTARY though you could watch it as a movie. It is for those that enjoy food for thought. This is not a comedy or light fare. This will shock you!

Canada Asking The U.S. To Shoot Down UFO In Its Sovereign Airspace Is Pretty Astounding — A Dangerous Precedent.

by Anura Guruge

The irony is that this, i.e., shooting intruders, is all about protecting & defending the integrity of your air sovereignty. So, it seems very strange that Canada would INVITE another nation, the U.S. be it, to enter its sovereign air space & moreover shoot down something over its country. Pretty astounding. In my opinion a bad precedent.

Yes, yes, yes, Canada & the U.S. are NATO members (with their ‘one for all’ etc. etc.), belong together to NORAD etc. etc. But, Canada does have its own Air Force with at least 80 operational CF-188 Hornet fighter jets. And, furthermore, some of these were scrambled. So, the Canadian pilots hung around watching while the Americans did the shooting.

I have to think the Canadian Air Force is not too happy about this. Kind of insulting. I also assume that quite a few Canadians are upset.

What was ‘Justin Trudeau‘ smoking?

In my opinion this was a big miscalculation on the part of Trudeau. He should have let his pilots do the job & take the honors.

For the last few days this has been a TRICK QUESTION!

I checked the UPDATES they suggest. No help. They still have ‘Pelosi’! Wow. That was invalid as of January 3, 2023.

Just amuses me. I am not sure whether they can program their computers to take out this question.

Just SHARING with YOU in case you didn’t know this. SMILE.

The question is, how do I know. BIG Smile.

Today’s ‘Google Doodle’ For ‘Elijah McCoy’ & The Origins Of The Phrase ‘The Real McCoy’.

Though I have been somewhat of a railway buff all my life I had until I saw today’s ‘Google Doodle‘ never heard of Elijah McCoy — though I have seen the lubrication devices devised by him. My loss. It was interesting to read about him. Quite the guy.

I was, however, skeptical as to whether the saying ‘The Real McCoy’ really could be attributed to him. Yes, it is possible, but seems a tad unlikely. Just as with the ‘Red Light District‘ it just seems the term would have originated in Europe (rather than the U.S.) — & in this context in Scotland.

So, I would be more inclined to go with explanation #1 per Wikipedia (above).

That Robert Louis Stevenson used the phrase just 11 years after Elijah’s patent would lend credence that the phrase has to predate the patent. It is unlikely that the invention & then the term would have gained enough traction to have reached the U.K. and the ears of Mr. Stevenson in such a relatively short time. But, we can’t be sure.

So, I willing to be dissuaded, though for now I remain skeptical that Elijah was the REAL McCoy. But, granted, he was QUITE the McCoy.

I Am Skeptical That The Term ‘Red-Light District’ Originated With Early U.S. Railroads.

It, viz., ‘red-light district‘, is a term I am conversant with given that I grew up in Europe & am no stranger to most of the major western European hotspots. So, I was taken back when listening to the above book, i.e., ‘The Survival of Margaret Thomas‘, to hear the claim that the term originated with U.S. railroad workers c. 1880. Seemed incongruous on multiple fronts.

Just had a feeling that the term had to be older & to have originated in Europe, in one or more of the legendary port cities. Plus the notion of a railway sending folks to gather up workers in an ’emergency’ by going door-to-door just did not feel right. I have a fairly good feel for railway lore. They would have used a steam whistle, a siren or clanked a loud bell. Even firing into the air would have been more expedient & efficient.

So, of course, I looked it up & you can read the Wikipedia entry above. It was good to see that they too expressed skepticism of the Old West yarn. But, I will let you ponder this. My goal was to bring it to your attention.

You might also find this post, from a year ago, thanks to another book I was listening to of interest. You can learn so much from books.
